So What’s The Deal With IGTV?

One of the worlds most downloaded apps, Instagram had announced its latest feature called IGTV not too long ago. Many Instagram users were in awe of the new update as it also caused tons of commotion in the world of online creators and companies that have already established a good set of audiences on their YouTube channels over the years.

Fearing that they will now have to switch platforms to suit the trends of the web, the most asked question was, “is IGTV going to take over YouTube?” Well, a good few months have passed by and we can now determine the result of that question.


Kevin Systrom, the co-founder and CEO of Instagram introduced IGTV to the world in late June 2018 stating, “Just like turning on the TV, IGTV starts playing as soon as you open the app. You don’t have to search to start watching content from people you already follow on Instagram and others you might like based on your interests.” This is just one of the main features which makes the platform different from YouTube, which actually does allow you to rather search for what it is you’d like to watch. IGTV is also known for its vertical video feature which differs from YouTube as well since the platform is mainly for horizontal viewing and video capturing.

“There are a lot of things IGTV doesn’t do still that YouTube does. It’s competing with a part of what YouTube does by focusing in a different way. Its emphasis on vertical video also poses a challenge for online creators. Every camera shoots horizontal, right? So we’re all super used to framing things with lots of horizontal room,” says Marques Brownlee who is famous for his Tech-Videos on YouTube. YouTube is also known for its accessibility to use on almost any device such as desktops, TV’s and smartphones, whilst IGTV is still only limited to be accessible via smartphones.

As IGTV is still a work in progress many users are already loving it and making the most out of posting their own original content whilst the app is still fairly new. “I had already been drawn to the vertical look and feel from using my phone every day. I love that this platform glorifies that”, said content creator Nash Grier. As IGTV continues to imporve, Instagram overall still remains one of the most successful platforms in the world and has influenced over 1 billion people that joined since its launch in 2010. IGTV has only been out for less than a year and already has millions of contributors as it continues to grow day by day.
